Catcher in the Rye- p1-52

CHAPTER 1

• Main character introduced- touchy parents about certain subjects. moody. 
• DB: comes over and visits main character. Just got a Jaguiar (Car). cost him $4000. rich? i think yes. Wrote a book of stories. one of which was entitled 'the goldfish'. 'prostitute'? main character's brother. claimed as a 'prostitute' meaning he is selling himself as a writer to 'the man'. as though saying that 'the man' is paying him for his writing. Won't often appear in the novel
• Main character dislikes movies. 
• Main character: watched school football games from a hill instead of going to the actual game. assumed to be about 16. 
• Football Games: not many girls. only seniors can bring girls
• Main character: would rather be in a place with girls instead of being just at football games. likes the headmaster's daughter. 
• Headmaster's daughter: bites nails
• Main character: manager of the fencing team. forgot the fencing foils on the subway because he was distracted

• Main character: was written a note by someone on the fencing team. Kicked off fencing team. flunking 4 subjects and was not applied to school. fencing had high academic standards
• "the axe": cut from the team, disbanded, etc
• Main character: gloves were stolen. lots of crooks in his school. Cold during football game. When he leaves a place, he likes to feel that he is leaving it. if he doesnt it makes him feel worse. 
• Tincher and Campbell: Tossing a ball back and forth with main character at night to the point where it was dark enough that they could barely find the ball
• Characters are in boarding school. High school. stay in dorms. Some people didnt live on campus. 
• Novel jumps around a lot. 
• Main character: heavy smoker. or at least he used to be. almost got TB
• TB: Tuberculosis (respiratory disease)

CHAPTER 2

• Old spenders parents were each about 70 years old.
• Main character: has very strong opinions about teachers at his school.
• Spencers: got big bangs out of buying things. get very excited about buying a blanket
• Main Character: attempts to be polite and 'grown up'.
• Spencer: yells a lot outside class. Lots of pills and medicine. 
• Main Character: doesnt like sick people. doesnt like seeing old guys in their bathrobes hanging around. thinks they are gross. was asked by spencer to come over and say goodbye for he would not be returning to the boarding school after the break was over. parents will be very disappointed in him getting kicked out of school. is 17- acts about 13. 6' 2.5" tall. grey hair. sometimes acts like he's about 12. parents think he acts childish as well. gets bored when people tell him to act his age. 
• Spencer: very comfortable with main character around (ie. picks his nose in front of him)
• Main character: passed english class. didnt really have to do much work in english class. flunked history because they did nothing. "couldnt help failing"- Spencer. Only glanced through text book a few times. mad about history. had only stopped by to say goodbye and ended up sitting and talking for a long while.
